In the rolling process, steel blooms, billets and bars acquire surface defects and blemishes which have to be removed. The scarfing process which achives this is akin to flame gouging.

Most steelworks now scarf both by hand and by machine. Stainless steel can be treated by powder scarfing in the same manner as for powder cutting.
